In praise of praise

It's needed in our culture of complaint

Motivational speaker Loretta LaRoche says 75 percent of daily conversation is negative. We complain about the weather, the traffic, the schedule and sleep. So she's printed a bumper sticker that says "STOP GLOBAL WHINING!"

Her observation and slogan are right on target. One result of our intensely competitive and adversarial culture is that people are cautious about praising others. Those who do so are considered soft or indulgent. It's much more acceptable to criticize, carp and complain.
