The point in David Miller's editorial (June) is well-taken: Why should
differences, be they theological or ecclesiological, be allowed to
subvert the main mission of the church? The problem is, the shoe is on
the wrong foot. Rather, the question is: Why does the ELCA leadership
risk schism and loss of support for the sake of a doctrine — the
historic episcopate — that we don't believe? It seems our leadership
puts joining with the Episcopal Church above the very needs described
in "Tell it to Moyo."
