God has opened a magnificent door. ... A grand panorama of mission stretches before us." With those words ELCA Secretary Lowell Almen greeted the House of Deputies of the 73rd General Convention of the Episcopal Church, meeting in Denver, after the body decisively approved Called to Common Mission.
The full communion agreement, adopted by the 1999 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, binds the two churches in mission and ministry. CCM is "not a marriage or a merger," said Donald Brown, chair of the Episcopal Church's Committee on Ecumenical Relations. "Each church will retain its own liturgical, theological and organizational uniqueness and integrity," while being able to exchange clergy and cooperatively plan pastoral and outreach ministries.
