Pro-choice Christian?

ELCA teaching statement offers insight

Is "pro-choice Christian" an oxymoron? I can't find any Bible reference that OKs the slaughter of the innocents.

No. "Pro-choice" and "pro-life" are shorthand phrases that label and polarize people on the difficult issue of abortion.

Your words refer to the biblical account of King Herod, who, full of fury and lust for revenge, slaughtered all the children in and around Bethlehem who were 2 years old and under (Matthew 2:16-18). This phrase applies more aptly to the thousands of children who die each day from malnutrition, war, abuse, lack of medical care and economic injustice — not to abortion.
