At its General Conference May 2-12, the United Methodist Church voted decisively to retain policies prohibiting gays and lesbians from ordination, to ban same-sex union ceremonies and to describe homosexuality as "incompatible with Christian teaching." The church's statement calling the practice of homosexuality "incompatible with Christian teaching" has served to mold its doctrine on such related issues as ordination and same-sex unions. Delegates voted 628-337 to retain the statement.
