Synod bishop elections
Elected: Kevin S. Kanouse, 47, as bishop of the Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synod, effective July 1.
When: April 30, on the fifth ballot, 201-174 over Wayne L. Menking, director of The Ministry Development Center of the Southwest, Arlington, Texas.
Bio: Pastor of Advent Lutheran Church, Arlington, Texas. Graduate of Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa.; the Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa.; and Brite Divinity School/Texas Christian University, Fort Worth. Also served St. Paul Lutheran Church, Penryn, Pa.
Replaces: Mark Herbener, who retires June 30.
Elected: Ray Tiemann, 47, as bishop of the Southwestern Texas Synod, effective Sept. 1.
When: May 20, on the fifth ballot, 228-205 over Stanley J. Meyer, an assistant to the synod bishop.
Bio: Pastor of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg, Texas. Graduate of Texas Lutheran University, Seguin; Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa; and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Also served Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, Cameron, Texas.
Replaces: James E. Bennett, who retires Aug. 31.

* Roy G. Almquist, bishop of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, May 6 on the fourth ballot, 201-71 over John A. Berntsen, Trinity Lutheran Church, Perkasie, Pa.
* Allan Bjornborg, bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod, May 19, on the first ballot, with 316 votes. No one else received more than nine votes.
* Robert W. Mattheis, bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod, May 20, on the third ballot, 329-103 over Donna R. Duensing, (on leave from call) of El Cerrito, Calif.
* Floyd M. Schoenhals, bishop of the Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod, April 29, on the first ballot with 107 of the 126 votes cast.
