Some were skeptical when the 359-member Lutheran Church of Honolulu set out to stage what they touted as Hawaii's first-ever complete performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's epic St. Matthew Passion.
"Perhaps the congregation is insane," David Barber, pastor of Honolulu, remarked in his Easter Day sermon. "A congregation of this size has no business dreaming such big dreams." But his comments were strictly tongue-in-cheek, coming after the fact--after Honolulu had pulled off the extravaganza to the cheers of two standing-room-only audiences and critics alike.
