The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Late-night evangelism

Look out psychics, car dealers and diet-pill pushers, you have some spirited competition in your world of middle-of-the-night radio advertising.

Just ask Curtis Green, writer of commercial jingles and proprietor of "877-BLESSED," a radio ad ministry that helps listeners find a church home. "People are spending billions of dollars on psychics looking for real answers," Green says. "The church of Jesus Christ definitely ought to be out there."

Just after midnight on a popular Chicago R&B station, listeners hear: "There's a church right in your neighborhood, where your spirit comes alive."

So far, only 180 churches have registered with 877-BLESSED. Churches pay $100 a year to be listed, plus a $150 initiation fee. Green's goal is that the ministry be ecumenical and national.
