"We affirm that what unites us is stronger than what separates us." With those words of affirmation, more than 5,000 delegates and visitors to the eighth assembly of the World Council of Churches committed themselves to continuing the work of an ecumenical organization whose future seemed precarious at the outset of the gathering.
