Update: Ashes to life

The mound of flowers at Jim Holloway's funeral last May challenged his family to use them to express his devout faith and hope.

Holloway, 40, an organist and music professor at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash., was shot and killed in a random act of violence May 17 (see July 2001, page 47).

Holloway's friends and family dried and packaged the flowers to make them available to burn for ashes at Ash Wednesday services (Feb. 13). Each of the more than 300 packages of flowers includes a prayer for preparing ashes, a brief description of Holloway's life and a Lenten prayer he wrote in 1990.

While quantities last, the packages are available for $3 (shipping and expenses) by sending your name and address to Janet Prichard at: jprichard@seanet.com or Box 82603, Kenmore, WA 98028.
