Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity at the Vatican, speaks at the Lutheran Center chapel in Chicago April 16, after being introduced by ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson.
A signer of the 1999 Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification between Lutherans and Roman Catholics, Kasper said the churches are in an "interim stage" in the search for visible unity. Old animosities and misunderstandings have been overcome, but "we remain in a context of partial unity" that calls for "an ecumenism of life. We have to apply all we have achieved to the way we actually live."
