Shining star

Two beaded medallions were the last things Gaylord Thomas packed.

The Division for Global Mission staff member was part of an ELCA Stand With Africa trip last January. In Bukoba, Tanzania, he gave a medallion to Newstar Sebastian, 10 (July, page 50), who has AIDS. Jonas Balami, who works with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania's program for AIDS orphans, says Newstar has been in extreme pain since April.

When American Indians at the California State Prison, Solano, learned Newstar had been given a medallion they made, "the response was overwhelming," Thomas says. They made more jewelry to be given away. "The way these two groups of people connected provides us with hope and faith that we can look toward that beloved community Dr. [Martin Luther] King talked about," Thomas says.
