Bishop supports president's call for Palestinian state

The White House wanted to know: What is the ELCA's official reaction to President Bush's June 24 message on the Middle East?

Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson told the president in a June 27 letter — much of which he also has said in a public statement — that "the ELCA welcomes your renewed call for an independent Palestinian state and, at the same time, your affirmation of Israel's right to exist.

"It is clear that the governments representing Israelis and Palestinians cannot achieve peace on their own. The time has come for determined international leadership."
