The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Looking for Bonhoeffer papers

The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works English Edition is the biggest translation project of a Lutheran theologian in 50 years. Fortress Press has already published seven of 17 volumes, including The Young Bonhoeffer to be released in late November.

But editors continue to look for letters and papers by or connected to Bonhoeffer that may be in private hands.

The editors of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works English Edition want copies of the 1911 revision of the Luther Bible identified by the subtitle: Durchgesehen im Auftrag der deutschen Evangelischen Kirchenkonferenz.

Of particular interest, says Clifford Green, the project's executive director, are two original manuscripts: the essay "Church and State," published in Ethics; and the manuscript of Bonhoeffer's diary from his stay in New York in summer 1939.

Those with information about these manuscripts can contact Green at: 40 Battery St., # 202, Boston MA 02109 or e-mail cjgreen660@cs.com
