At presstime, Maine State Police said more than one person was responsible for the arsenic poisoning at Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church, New Sweden, Maine (June, page 35).
The poisoning happened during the coffee hour April 27. One parishioner was killed and 14 others severely sickened.
Police linked parishioner Daniel Bondeson, who committed suicide five days after the incident, to the poisoning but said six to 10 others in New Sweden are considered suspects.
Police spokesman Steve McCausland said authorities are exploring tensions within the congregation. One issue is the Bondeson family gift of a communion table that has sat unused. Another is a possible merger with neighboring congregations.
