“Many Trips Around the World" is the name of the traditional quilt pattern that is formed of brightly colored bricks at Lutheran World Relief's Baltimore headquarters. Each brick — when bought for $500 — pays for shipping 250 real quilts to people in need overseas. So far 1,000 bricks toward the 10,000-brick goal have been given, with the donor name engraved on each before installation. Go to www.lwr.org/quiltplaza for more information. LWR recently earned an A+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy, which uses as chief criteria the portion of the budget going to program services. In 2002 LWR used 94 percent for programs.
