Lutherans help family farmers suffering despite prosperous times

Taking a break from her farm parish to visit a friend in suburban Chicago, Marsha Swenson seized upon a teaching moment. As her friend put groceries away and pulled out a package of thick pork chops, Swenson asked, "Did you know the guy who raised the hogs got 9 cents a pound for them?"

Her friend was astonished. "Who gets the rest of the money?" she asked.

"Well, it's other people involved in the process," said Swenson, pastor of First Lutheran Church, Lee, Ill.
