Kenn Inskeep, director of the ELCA Department for Research and Evaluation, describes four types of ELCA congregations.
1. Large, suburban, program-oriented congregations.
2. Smaller congregations that are also growing but are much more faith-based.
3. The majority are in the third group--old-time Lutheran congregations all over the country.
4. The fourth kind isn't doing well; they're losing members and are unhappy.
