Ebenezer Lutheran Church

Columbia, S.C.

Organized in 1830, Ebenezer is located in downtown Columbia, a city of nearly 100,000 (98,052 according to 2000 Census) and the state capital. But most of its nearly 1,000 members live in the suburbs, not the city. The congregation is predominately white, non-Latino, with half the members under 50 years old. Average worship attendance is 350.

Why they're doing the study: Ebenezer wants to better inform members about the need for clear and open dialogue about homosexuality and wants them to become better disciples through addressing this complex issue. Same-sex marriages and the ordination of gays are emotional issues, Honeycutt said, which is why he wants members to study them together as faithful church people.
