January 1999 For the Record: Division for Global Mission board

Division for Global Mission board. Oct. 15-17, Techny, Ill.

  • Asked DGM staff to consult with the Division for Church in Society--with a report to the March 1999 board meeting--to find a way for the ELCA to support the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates' appeal for a "Decade for a Culture of Nonviolence" and to provide leadership and resources to the global community on nonviolence with special emphasis on children and youth.
  • Requested a needs assessment and response in Sierra Leone in the midst of civil strife. Asked that ELCA members pray for peace in Sierra Leone.
  • Continued discussion on Global Mission 21, a long-range planning document that lifts up a vision of accompaniment (walking together in interdependence and mutuality) with partner churches.
  • Requested the ELCA Church Council to approve transfer of funds for continuation of a history research project.
  • Asked the Church Council to urge ELCA members and congregations to use the 25th anniversary of the World Hunger Appeal in 1999 to increase support for and awareness of hunger in the world.
