Division for Outreach board, Mundelein, Ill., May 5-8.

* Heard that the division's 1998 budget received a boost of $900,000 from increased giving to the ELCA. The division of the funds: $425,000 to help launch "In the City for Good," a 10-year project to open outreach opportunities in urban areas; $320,000 for additional mission starts; $75,000 for the Mission Founders program; $50,000 to increase pastor/developers' salaries; and $40,000 to expand the work of peer advisers for urban, small town and rural congregations.
* Discussed a draft of a four-part mission strategy to multiply new ministries, renew existing congregations and implement ethnic-specific strategies and ways to reach out to those living in poverty.
* Directed staff to work with other ELCA units to develop a churchwide challenge to start 2,000 congregations between 2000 and 2020.
