Real people, real questions: "If I don't believe Jesus walked on water, am I going to hell? Do I have to believe the Bible word for word?" Or how about this: "If Jesus did not actually say, 'Where two or three gather in my name, I am there with them,' is it any less true?"
About 50 participants discussed questions like these at Bible studies sponsored by English Lutheran Church, LaCrosse, Wis., over the past 18 months. The classes began after Bill Kisken, a participant in the church's Monday morning study group, approached James Barsch, one of the pastors, with a copy of Marcus Borg's book, Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time. Borg, a member of the Jesus Seminar (see page 8), is one of many scholars who have written biographies of Jesus based on what he thinks can be historically proven.
