Friendship: A place where God lives

Friendship is a gift — one that allows us glimpses of our best selves, stretches our hearts and trains them to love our neighbors. It creates pathways to and from the source of all love: God.

ELCA pastor and historian Martin E. Marty writes: "One of the ways we break out of mere dependency in childhood is to develop friendships. Spiritually, friends teach us that 'we are not our own' and 'we are not alone.' "

When we understand that we aren't our own and we aren't alone, we are empowered to give as well as receive. We are given the power to be a friend. As Marty would say, we break out of "mere dependency."
