W e've been talking at our congregation about Christmas programs and the Advent season of preparation for such a glorious event. The usual themes emerge--prepare, anticipate, getting ready.
As I spent more time thinking about the Advent message, I thought of the spring flooding, which is nothing new to this area. We knew a flood was coming. We thought we were prepared. Scores of people sandbagged around Ada, Minn., many working around the clock. But when the dikes couldn't hold back the water and our streets and homes filled with the anger of the elements, many of us left defeated, helpless and fearful for the future. Did we not prepare? Grown men cried. Parents comforted children. T he elderly stared in disbelief.
