"In just 10 days everything purchased for Christmas was destroyed. Everything. Clothes were ripped. Dolls were cut. It was exasperating," said Susan Luttner, an ELCA pastor from Pittsburgh. "Everything in our house was ruined."
The destruction that continued for months was caused by two 5-year-old girls featured in "Joy comes in small bundles" (The Lutheran, May 1995). Luttner, who is single, adopted Alena and Mary from a Russian orphanage in 1994. Things seemed fine until they approached school age. "When kids hit school age, learning disabilities are discovered, and behavioral things, too, as kids feel more settled and comfortable," Luttner said.
