Land mine ban honored

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland asked the Finnish government to support the worldwide land mine ban, to increase funding for land mine clearing and to aid victims of the mines.

Meanwhile, Lutheran World Federation General Secretary Ishmael Noko said of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize award to the International Campaign to Ban Land Mines, "Whilst we celebrate this honor, we also recognize that the work of the campaign is only just the beginning in its efforts to promote a truly global treaty bringing into practical effect the cherished aim of complete eradication of antipersonnel land mines. I call upon all member churches and related agencies to redouble their advocacy efforts with such governments as have not yet committed themselves to signing the antipersonnel mines-ban treaty in Ottawa in December."
