Minn. church welcomes new statement

Eve Werger was 6 weeks old when she received her first communion at St. Peder Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. Daniel Pearson began communing infants there seven years ago, a practice continued by the current pastors, Mary and Robert Albing.

Although previous ELCA guidelines--adopted from two predecessor bodies--prohibited communing infants, the 1997 Churchwide Assembly altered this by adopting The Use of the Means of Grace, a statement on sacramental practices.
