We're all familiar with Christ's injunction to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. As individual Christians we're clearly obligated to pay taxes to support the functions of government.
But what about the church as an organization? Should it, too, contribute to the civil government's maintenance?
This
question most often surfaces regarding local property tax. Historically
states have granted nonprofit organizations, including religious
bodies, a blanket exemption from these taxes.
