By the time the 1997 Churchwide Assembly came to an end, I knew that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was a church with a future.
It wasn't the powerful sermon on the text "I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18) that Dr. Fred Meuser preached on Sunday--although that assured me of Christ's presence with the church through the ages.
