Every first, third and fifth Sunday of the month, David Maddox, 33, presides at worship at Bethany Lutheran Church, Jersey City, N.J. He delivers the homily and the children's sermon. In between, the busy vicar visits parishioners, co-teaches confirmation, coaches basketball, assists in worship at nearby St. John Lutheran Church, and meets with Bethany's leaders as they struggle to make their multicultural ministry grow.
Maddox is a Horizon intern — one of 30 students from the eight ELCA seminaries who work in congregations that can't afford the $21,000 a year it takes to support an intern. They do so, thanks to the Horizon Internship Program, an initiative of the divisions for Ministry and Outreach.
