When E. Joyce Matheny produced church bulletins, she brought them to life the old-fashioned way: with a typewriter from Sears Roebuck and a mimeograph machine she believes was "model 410."
Matheny served two Lutheran churches in South Dakota — Trinity, Mobridge, and Norway, Glenham — as a parish secretary for 26 years. And at age 76, Matheny was on a recent Sunday "called back into duty." Not to do the bulletin, mind you, but to lead worship at Trinity, now without a pastor. She did everything except preach, which she supposes she could do — she did some public speaking during all those years as a church worker (associate in ministry), after all.
