Freeloaders don't get it

We all benefit from the ELCA, all need to do our fair share for the good of the body

"Freddy the Freeloader" — one of Red Skelton's more memorable characters — always tried to get something for nothing, pretending all the while he was perfectly innocent of any such endeavor and feigning surprise when he was caught in the act.

That old image of Freddy comes to mind whenever I hear about congregations that don't contribute their fair share to the mission support of the ELCA.

You know the ones I mean. We have some in our synod, and you have some in yours. These are the congregations and their pastors that, for whatever reason or excuse, don't send on a fair percent of their income to support the work of the wider church.
