The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

50 years of LWF

A history of the LWF, From Federation to Communion, chronicles the emergence of the world body from 1947 to the present, including its roots in the Lutheran World Convention of 1923.

Authors from Denmark, India and the United States prepared the volume, including Norman A. Hjelm, a former LWF staff member and an ELCA pastor.

The volume, which is arranged topically, includes 350-plus pages of history and a handbook of facts and figures about the federation. Four pillars are identified as the "key to the establishment and subsequent development" of the LWF: rescue for the needy, common initiatives in mission, joint efforts in theology and a common response to the ecumenical challenge.
