At its most basic level, giving is connected to love. Sure, people give for many reasons: to manipulate or because they've been manipulated, to show they believe in a cause or campaign, out of guilt, to avoid offending or just to make the solicitor go away.
These motives, though real, do nothing to develop and nurture lifelong givers. As Christians, we give out of an abiding love for God and God's work. This love weaves generosity into the fabric of a believer's life.
More than 40 years ago, C.S. Lewis wrote about the four loves in the New Testament that also help determine how we give.
