Don't put the older adults of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Charleston, S.C., on the shelf or in a rocker. They're too busy. As one XYZer (Xtra Years of Zest) puts it, "We recycled teenagers can still move."
That they do. The XYZers--ages 55 and older--sing, volunteer, tap dance, bowl, picnic, travel, bike, go white-water rafting, play cards, hike and practice the art of tai chi.
DeLouris Hollinger has kept these "recycled teenagers" movin g since 1988. Until recently her husband, Richard, led the ministry for the frail elderly. Both programs began after a congregational survey found a need for older adult ministries. A committee was formed and goals were set:
