When Joan Mau was ordained in 1979, she joined the ranks of those who are turning centuries of patriarchy on its head in the church and elsewhere (see page 42). Years after the feminist movement began and 27 years after the first Lutheran woman was ordained, the struggle continues. Women are assuming leadership in the church in increasing numbers. What they experience ranges from respect to resentment.
