Artist Ellen Bianchi isn't content to create banners that symbolize the church seasons. She designs wall hangings that--like caterpillars becoming butterflies--transform as the church year progresses.
Bianchi started designing metamorphic hangings at University
Lutheran Church, East Lansing, Mich., five years ago. The canvas for this
elementary school art teacher is the huge expanse of gray concrete wall that backs
University's altar.
