John Hamre is working to reform defense budget management

There may be more prominent Lutherans in government, but none has a deeper impact on the way U.S. tax dollars are spent than John J. Hamre. President Clinton in 1993 appointed Hamre, 46, the principal Pentagon official responsible for preparing the nation's defense budget and improving the department's financial management.
