We heard more gratitude than misery

Last month I stepped through the looking glass and found another world. The adventure started, as such adventures should, in a perfectly ordinary way. I was one of six bishops who were meeting with members of a congregation in south Florida.

As we introduced ourselves, I learned that two of our hosts were nurses and the others were retired — one a teacher and the other a heavy equipment operator. A couple of them were lifelong Lutherans; the others had joined that congregation through family connections. So far no surprises.
