For 50 years, Ruth Connor did what many pastor's spouses have done during worship — cupped her hand behind her ear when her husband wasn't speaking loud enough or conspicuously looked at her watch if he was preaching too long.

Today Connor is the one who has to remember to speak loud and mind the time. When her husband, Bob, died two years ago, Hope Lutheran, Glenburn, N.D., chose her to lead the congregation.
