Contributions to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal hit a record in 1999, topping $16 million, said Lita Brusick Johnson, the program's director. That's 27 percent above 1998's figure of $12.5 million.
"The real bottom line isn't the numbers," she said. "It's the people whose lives will be saved or changed because members of our church heard God's call to do justice and feed those who are hungry."
The appeal provides direct relief for people in need worldwide and funds economic development programs. With the increase in 1999 donations, Hunger Appeal officials plan to strengthen support for medical care in Madagascar and for Americans affected by the rural crisis.
