Missouri Synod re-elects Kieschnick

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod re-elected Gerald Kieschnick during its 62nd Regular Convention, July 10-15. Kieschnick, 61, was elected to his second term on the first ballot, gaining 52.8 percent or 653 votes.

His election follows a controversial three-year term. Kieschnick gave permission to David Benke, president of the LCMS Atlantic District, to pray during an interfaith event in New York's Yankee Stadium following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Some LCMS leaders said this violated church doctrine and called for the removal of Benke and Kieschnick. Benke was suspended but is now serving again as district president.
