About 700 Lutherans came to Orlando, Fla., July 9-11 for "Lift Every Voice: A Multicultural Gathering In Praise, In Song, and In Dance." Worship in various cultural styles and languages, workshops, ethnic foods and frank discussion about the ELCA's commitment to anti-racism and a multicultural church marked the event, sponsored by the Commission for Multicultural Ministries.
Preaching at the opening worship, Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson reflected on his relationship with the multicultural community following his failed proposal last year for restructuring the ELCA, which would have eliminated the commission. "I frankly hear some of you questioning my leadership and asking if I've shaken the dust off my feet [regarding the church's commitment to anti-racism and a multicultural church]," he said. "Has trust been so broken between us that I can't fulfill my call?"
