Fatama's story

One Darfur woman struggles to survive in Sudan

Men, women and children suffer during the humanitarian crisis in Sudan hardships know no gender or age.

When men are sent from the refugee camps to gather material for shelter or water, they are killed or taken prisoner by the Janjaweed, the government-allied militia. The women are then sent in the mens place, but they are raped and beaten if found by the Janjaweed.

Fatama is just one example of the many women who tell stories of their rape, torture, beatings and the outcast children that result from rape. For her safety, her full name is not given. And photos are not available since she is too frightened to have her picture taken. Here's her story.
