Many faces have kept Jesus relevant to people of every time and place

The Sunday school teacher explains to her 4-year-old pupils: "We don't really know what Jesus looked like. Our picture of Jesus on the wall is just the artist's idea."

A boy replies, "Well, it sure looks like him!"

To Jim Bailey, professor of New Testament at Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, it's a blessing that Jesus' appearance remains a mystery.

"This allows people to have multiple appropriate images of Christ," he said.
