Update: Lutherans pour money into the Souper Bowl

Lutheran contributions to this year's Souper Bowl of Caring total $516,000 of the approximately $3 million collected, compared to $361,185 of $2.4 million last year.

The Souper Bowl of Caring asks parishioners to donate $1 to feed the hungry on the Sunday of the National Football League championship. Those who collect the money give it to the charity of their choice and report the amount to the nonprofit Souper Bowl of Caring. For the first time, the ELCA World Hunger Appeal urged congregations to get involved.

More Lutheran congregations participated this year — 1,916 compared to 1,650 last year.

The Church of the Damascus Road, an ELCA mission at the correctional facilities in Rockwell City and Fort Dodge, Iowa, collected $75.80 for the Hunger Appeal.
