Winning ways

Karyn Bye is showing America a lot of heart on and off the ice

"I don't mind telling the story over and over," says Karyn Bye, flashing an engaging smile as she tirelessly shares the experience of winning a 1998 Olympic gold medal with the U.S. women's hockey team in Nagano, Japan. Winning the gold fulfilled a dream for Karyn, a member of Ezekiel Lutheran Church, River Falls, Wis. Thrust into the spotlight, she is now a role model for kids nationwide.

"I talk to a lot of kids," Karyn says. "I tell them to make good decisions, to stay away from drugs and alcohol. I tell them to set realistic goals."

When Karyn visits a school, she prefers a classroom experience to a large assembly. "The kids think I'm a hero," she says. "But I want them to see me up close and know that I'm just an ordinary person who had a dream and worked hard for it."
