The power of the symbol continues

I saw something that stopped me in my tracks on Good Friday morning while grocery shopping and looking for Easter basket treats. There in the candy aisle, displayed among myriad sweet temptations — sugary chicks, marshmallow bunnies, confectionary eggs — were milk chocolate crosses.

I thought I'd become callous to the trivialization of the cross. But this seemed a new low.

A few days later I read about a megachurch in the Chicago area — not a subject the secular press often covers. The writer focused on the congregation's attempt to present Christianity in a "neutral setting," one deliberately excluding exhibition of the cross. "It's too dangerous," a pastor explained in an interview.
