Who leaves a job as a New York City newspaper columnist to teach in an urban high school? I did — last year. I know, it's not the most common career move. But working with teenagers can do funny things to you — such as change your priorities.
My switch was prompted by teenagers who met every Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church, Staten Island, N.Y. They showed me how rewarding youth work could be.
