Madeleine L'Engle and Luci Shaw, best friends and acclaimed authors, live on opposite coasts--L'Engle in New York City and Shaw in Bellingham, Wash. They share their lives and prayers via the phone. "Because being friends is one of the most important things in our lives, we don't let that physical separation be a barrier to being together 'in spirit and in truth,' " Shaw says. "Phone conversations and prayers are essentials for us."

They call their prayer friendship "trinitarian." "That is, it's two people and God, a triangle of intimacy and a flow of love between us. That is its most powerful benefit," Shaw says.
